Need to find your lost smartphone?

It’s amazing how much information we have at our fingertips with our smartphones but perhaps even more amazing is the amount of personal data that is stored on these small, high-tech devices. Imagine if you lost your smartphone or worst yet, if someone stole it. It’s devastating enough that you would have to pay a large amount of money to replace your actual phone, but this should actually be the least of your worries. All of your personal information could very easily end up in the wrong hands.

For example, what if someone accessed your smartphone and got access to your bank account? They could very easily take all of your money and possibly even learn your account number for future use.

What can I do? Locate your lost smartphone!

For those of you with an iPhone:

Click the “Find my iPhone” icon to open the app. If your device is turned off, a map will be shown with the last known location of your iPhone. If your device is turned on, a map will display a green dot indicating the whereabouts of your smartphone.

For those of you with an Android:

Locate your phone: Go to this website: Android Device Manager on your computer or tablet. A map will instantly appear with your device listed. Click on your device. Click the “GPS locate” button. The manager will display where your smartphone is located on the map.

What if I didn’t just lose it, but it was stolen?

If you suspect someone has stolen your phone, do NOT attempt to go to the address listed to get your iPhone or Droid. Going alone could put you in danger.  Call the police and have an officer go with you to try to retrieve your stolen smartphone. NBC News interviewed a 26-year-old lady who decided to take matters into her own hands – she admits what she did wasn’t the brightest action she could have taken that day.
