Senior Online Safety - MacIt is true that we hear more about computers using Windows operating system being attacked by malware than any other, including Mac’s and their Apple, iOS.  Not hearing much does not equal, does not exist, just not on the large and universal scale as the malware (malicious software) pointed at the Window’s machines. And while the risk is admittedly low, it is NOT at zero.  And we are all about getting the odds as close to zero as possible, to keep you safe and secure.

We looked around for some authoritative data and landed on information recently shared by the good folks at Panda Security, who recently crafted an article, “Are Macs invincible? – Five known threats,” which suitably made the case as to how Macs were susceptible to malware attack, just like any other operating system.  Two of the mentioned means are:

Panda spoke of a variant of the “trojan” malware which spreads via streaming sites, and exploits a vulnerability the Java language. The malware steals personal and bank information and then redirects the user to a number of fraudulent websites.

Another malware variant is the “Mac Defender” .zip files which exploit the pc and lock the machine down. The criminals then extort a ransom from the computer’s owner in order for the user to regain use of their machine.

In sum, using security software on all your devices, regardless of operating system is exercising good judgement.
