iPhones

We all hear the stories, we want to upgrade our device, but don’t want to pay retail, and are quite happy to be one or two generations behind, as well. So we save our coins and when we have what we think are enough, we head to the online marketplaces – eBay, Craigslist, and such in search of the “new to us” device. The gadget gods are with you and you find the device you want, at the price which is right. You contact the owner and arrange to purchase the device, in this case in iPhone. But before you pay the owner the fabulous bottom-of-the-barrel price, you want to determine if the iPhone you are about to purchase is a stolen item. Up until recently, there was no way of checking, but now Apple has a solution that indicates whether the iPhone was reported stolen/lost and had been “locked” by the former owner.

What do I do?

Apple makes it easy …

[box type=”info” align=”alignright” width=”200″ ]Every iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch has a serial number. iOS devices with cellular connectivity also have other unique identifiers including an International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number, Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID), Cellular Data Number (CDN), and Integrated Circuit Card ID (ICCID) number. You can find this information on your device, on the device packaging, or in iTunes on your computer.[/box]

Check Activation Lock

First thing you do is check the “Activation Lock” by visiting the Check Activation Lock status page, and input the identifier.  If you don’t have that number handy, visit the “how to identify your device” page on Apple. Now you enter the number and the “captcha” and the result will tell you if the device you are looking to purchase is “hot” or not.
