The AARP Washington hosted event was sold-out – standing room only. The participants heard from not only Washington AARP representatives, but also Washington’s King County Sheriff, John Urquhart and AARP regional and national executives who were also in attendance.
While others spoke of scams, cons and the Fraud Watch Network, readers will recognize many of the scams as having been discussed on these pages, I was invited to speak to the topic of Online Safety. To do so, I pulled from the pages of this website for my presentation.
I walked the audience through how when we connect to the internet, we are connecting to an ecosystem with 2.4 billion other participants, that we do so through a variety of devices and we are all very busy – posting millions of items every minute. I also showed the audience the threats which they need to be mindful of – Identity Theft for example, financial identity theft, tax refund identity theft, as well as, medical identity theft. The audience was then taken through a number of data points on keeping their devices secure and they the user secure. Based on the number of questions during the presentation and the number of good folks who stayed behind after the event had concluded to ask additional questions there clearly is a great deal of interest in keeping ourselves and our families safe and secure online and off.
For those who were unable to attend, I provide my presentation here in .pdf format: AARP-ScamJam-Burgess-pdf-01May2014
If you would like to watch the 45 min presentation – scroll down toward the bottom of the page and you can click on the video and it should play from the TVW – The public news station of Washington.
You may also obtain a copy of the handout which was provided to attendees, here, also in .pdf format: AARP Scam Jam – 01 May 2014 – Handout (pdf)
As always, we welcome your participation in the conversation via one of our social network engagement.
Enjoy, stay safe and above all – share the knowledge with your family.
I thank AARP Washington for the kind invite.
All the very best,
Christopher
